Oil leakage—or syneresis—is the number-one complaint in sugar scrub production. It happens when the oil phase separates from the sugar crystals, pooling at the top or leaking through the closure. The root causes are usually a poorly balanced emulsifier system, temperature stress, or insufficient thickening of the oil phase.
What to look for in production:
Many brands assume a sugar scrub is “waterless” and thus preservative-free. However, sugars are hygroscopic—they pull moisture from the air and from wet fingers during use. Once water activity (Aw) rises above 0.6, molds and bacteria can grow. Protecting the formula without over-promising “preservative-free” claims requires a smart, legally defensible approach.
